Frames: aluminum, steel, resin wicker or wood
- •Aluminum: does not rust, light enough to move, and powder-coated finishes last for years. The best all-around patio frame for Ohio. Downside: light pieces blow around in a storm; look for heavier cast or thick-wall aluminum.
- •Steel: heavier and cheaper, but once the powder coat chips it rusts, and it will chip. Fine under a covered porch, risky in the open.
- •Resin wicker (all-weather wicker): woven synthetic (polyethylene) over an aluminum frame. Looks like wicker, shrugs off rain, and is what most outdoor sectionals are made of. Avoid natural rattan outdoors; it falls apart in one Cincinnati season.
- •Wood (teak, acacia, eucalyptus): beautiful, heavy, and needs oiling. Teak lasts decades and silvers gracefully; acacia and eucalyptus need yearly care and a cover.
- •Molded resin and plastic: cheap and light; brittle after a few winters of UV and freeze.
Cushions: the part that actually fails
Frames last; cushions are what you replace. Look for solution-dyed acrylic fabric (Sunbrella is the famous brand, and there are good house versions) where the color is in the fiber and does not fade. Cheaper polyester covers fade in two summers. Inside, quick-dry reticulated foam lets rain pass through instead of soaking. Cushions come inside, full stop. Wood gets oiled in the fall and covered. Glass table tops should be stored flat or covered; a hard freeze after water pools on a glass top is how they crack. Do this once a year and a good set lasts ten.
