What size rug for a living room?
Big enough that the front legs of the couch and every chair sit on it. For a standard couch that is an 8 by 10; a 5 by 7 usually floats in the middle of the room and looks small. In an open plan, a 9 by 12 defines the seating area.
What size rug goes under a queen bed?
An 8 by 10 placed under the lower two-thirds of the bed, so it shows 2 to 3 feet on each side and at the foot. A 5 by 8 works across the foot of the bed, or two 3 by 5 runners on either side.
Which rugs hold up to dogs?
Low-pile, tight-weave synthetic rugs (polypropylene or polyester) in a mid-tone pattern, and machine-washable rugs for the door. Avoid loop-pile and shag with cats and high-shedding dogs.
