Buying living room: what to check before you order
Start with the wall, not the sofa
Measure the wall the seating will sit against, then subtract for walkways — you want at least 30 inches to get past a coffee table comfortably. A sectional that fits the wall but blocks the route to the kitchen is the most common mistake we help people undo. Bring the numbers and we will lay the piece out against them before you commit.
Sectional, sofa, or sofa plus chairs
Sectionals seat more people per square foot and suit rooms where the TV is the focus. A sofa with a pair of chairs is more flexible if you rearrange, and far easier to get up a staircase. Reclining pieces need clearance behind them unless they are wall-hugger designs — check the back clearance before you fall in love with one.
What holds up
Sit for five minutes, not five seconds. Seat depth and cushion firmness are the two things photographs cannot tell you, and they are what decides whether a sofa still feels right in year three. Ask us to show you the frame and the cushion core on anything you are serious about.
