The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends no child under 6 on the upper bunk. Younger kids lack the coordination to climb down safely at night, and most serious bunk bed injuries involve young children and falls.
How thick a mattress can go on the top bunk?
Usually 6 to 8 inches. The guardrail must sit at least 5 inches above the top of the mattress to work, so a thick pillow-top up top defeats it. The bottom bunk can take any thickness.
Twin over full or twin over twin?
Twin over full fits a bigger kid, a sleepover guest or a parent at story time on the bottom, and separates into a standalone full bed later. It needs about 16 inches more width than a twin over twin.
Can bunk beds be separated into two beds?
Most twin-over-twin and twin-over-full bunks can, and the listing says so. Loft beds cannot; the space under a loft is a desk or storage rather than a second bed.
