Buying bedroom: what to check before you order
Sets versus building it piece by piece
A complete bedroom set arrives matched in finish, hardware and scale, which is the hard part to get right later. Buying piece by piece works when you already own something you are keeping — just check that the new finish reads warm or cool the same way yours does, under your light rather than showroom light.
Measure the ceiling, not just the floor
Headboard height is what catches people out, especially with upholstered and canopy beds in rooms with sloped ceilings. Check your mattress size too: a queen bed frame will not take a king mattress, and storage beds add height that changes how the mattress sits.
Room to open the drawers
Dressers and chests need clearance in front to open fully, which is easy to lose to a bed corner or a door swing. If the room is tight, a taller chest with a smaller footprint usually beats a long low dresser.
