Buying dining room: what to check before you order
Seat the week, extend for the holidays
Count how many people you actually seat on a normal Tuesday, then buy for that and let an extension leaf cover Thanksgiving. A table sized for the biggest day of the year eats the room for the other 360.
Leave 36 inches around the table
That is the clearance a chair needs to pull out and someone to walk behind it. Measure the room, subtract 72 inches total, and what is left is your maximum table length. Counter-height and bar-height sets take less floor because the chairs tuck closer.
Chairs take the punishment
