When used furniture is the right call

- •Things that get replaced soon: a first apartment coffee table, a dorm chair, a temporary bed for a six-month lease.
- •Real antiques and mid-century pieces with resale value, if you know what you are looking at.

When used furniture costs more than it looks

Cushions that have taken someone else's shape do not come back. Fabric that looks fine in a photo smells like a house you have never been in. The bed bug problem, said plainly

It makes sense for a high-quality frame you love, a family heirloom, or an unusual size you cannot buy. It does not make sense for the average ten-year-old couch. Recovering dining chair seats, on the other hand, is cheap and easy and worth doing.
Consignment stores vs used furniture stores vs Marketplace
- •Consignment shops: curated, usually clean, prices are a fraction of retail but not tiny, no delivery in most cases, no returns.
- •Used furniture stores and thrift: lowest prices, least inspection, most variable condition. Good for solid wood, risky for upholstery.
- •Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist: cheapest of all and occasionally free, but it is you, a truck, a stranger's house and no recourse.
- •All three: no warranty, no financing, and no same day delivery.
